Have you ever thought what it would be like to watch a movie that was basically a long presenation of endless words, or to play a video game that is black and white? Well, think about it this way, what would it be like if a war story had no imagery in it? It would be terrible wouldn't it! That is one of the reasons why I think the author used it to such effect in this book, which happens to be a war novel.
Another reason why he used it so much is because the point of view is first person, meaning you are seeing the story through, usually, the main characters eyes. You are seeing and feeling what it is feeling. Also, Frederico is often by himself, so he has to explain the things he sees. I am almost positive that this is the most dominant element in this book.

Imagery is in all books, all the good ones at least, but there isn't anything that makes the book itself more than just the images the author creates? Thanks for the catch-22 recommendation by the way, three weeks is the correct amout of time to read it.
ReplyDeletei agree that imagery is the main literary element, it shows up all the time in the book.
