Poetry Out Loud performances

"Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward," by Anne Sexton was recited by Amanda Fernandez. I was impressed by Amanda's dramatization, volume, and articulation during the poem. She emphasized each piece to it's fullest and raised her voice during the climaxes of the piece. She would wave her arms and her body would move and shake when she tried to convey anger. It was intersting to watch. Overall it was a great performance.

What I thought the poem meant is that sex at a young age is a very wrong thing. It is shunned by everybody, and nobody treats you like you should be treated. An example of this in the poem is the way the doctors treat her in the hospital and the way the father of the baby left her. "Go child, who is my sin and nothing more," writes Anne Sexton. Anne is saying that this baby wasn't meant to happen. This is what I analyzed from the poem.

Mockingbird Motif

The mockingbird motif in To Kill a Mockingbird was that you shouldn't kill or hurt someone that is innocent of the crime. For example: Boo Radley saving the children and Tom Robinson not raping Mayella Ewell but still being convicted, even though everybody knew it was wrong. This adds meaning to ther themes in the novel, like loss of innocence/ growing up. The kids learned about all the evil that goes on in the world and the world isn't as safe as they thought it would be.

This motif helped me get a better insight of what a motif means by making it clear to me what the motif was, what it did, and why. It showed me how it supports major themes and why motifs are so important to writing. If motifs weren't in writing, writing wouldn't come up to it's full potential. This is the first time I have recognized a motif in writing so clearly.

Influential Proverbs

When I was embarking onto my middle school years I was always told that I was changing. Many things were forced upon me and many things I didn't want to show. One of those things was my hobbies as a child. I would play with my army guys, Star Wars action figures and I would collect them. I was afraid to let anyone know that I did this. I told my dad this one day and he said, "enjoy your childhood because it only comes once." So, I played with them but with a little more ease. I think one of the reasons I didn't want to show them to people was because I wanted to look like a "grownup," looking back, I was wrong.

Looking back on this I wish I was back in my childhood years. Clear heart, light work load, enjoyed almost anything, played sports with anybody and everybody, and life is so simple. Life wasn't polluted then, now you have to worry about protection, money, future, and so many other factors that entwine your life. So much knowledge comes with so much responsibility. You have to enjoy every step in life to enjoy the life that you have. That's what this quote taught me. Enjoy and be contempt with what you have and enjoy your life, it could be so much harder. Also, be yourself.
